The Stratomaster Enigma

The World's Premier Glass Cockpit System

for non-certified aircraft

(Click on image for larger view)

This incredible, feature packed instrument goes further than any EFIS ever created. Enigma is not just the most advanced EFIS available, it is at the same time the most flexible, customizable and open system available ... and ... the lowest cost!

On these pages (and by downloading the manuals and other documents) you will find all about Enigma, its setup, operation and maintenance (for those lucky enough to own one !).

Enigma is for everyone ! We don't prescribe fixed screens with fixed functions. Every pilot is different. Every aircraft is different. Enigma gives you 9 full screens that you can design yourself from a library of hundreds of instruments and functions. Use our provided default screens, modify them or make your own. Share them with your fellow flyers.

Homebuilding just got a new dimension. EFIS systems, by bringing everything together in one display, took away the freedom to design your own panel. Now, Enigma EFIS gives you back that freedom, whilst bringing an entirely new level of features and sophistication to EFIS!

Enigma – General Overview

Enigma is a hardware as well as software concept that promotes a flexible, powerful EFIS platform together will a software application system that is highly user modifiable.

As a hardware EFIS platform, Enigma provides state of the art multi-processor based
processing utilizing components chosen for absolute robustness in radiation intense environments such as found at high altitudes. This is coupled with intense low power design methods to further maximize overall system application and reliability.

The large amount of flexibility built into the base system allows the adaption of Enigma to almost any mission and aircraft. Due to low system cost, Enigma is equally suited to microlight aircraft, gliders, rotor craft but provides enough flexibility to be utilized up to twin engined aircraft with full dual engine monitoring.

Enigma Engine Monitoring Hardware

The Enigma can monitor up to 24 thermocouple channels and 4 fuel tanks using two 'RDAC' engine monitoring computers.

Usually only one RDAC is required (12 channels, 2 fuel tanks and all the other desired engine functions like oil and water temperature and pressure, rpm, manifold air pressure (special RDAC), fuel pressure, fuel flow, carb ice warning (plus others functions).

RDAC-XB/D Engine Monitoring Computer

Functions:

  • Twelve channel thermocouple amplifier, high resolution chopper stabilized system with full cold junction compensation and bow voltage correction to laboratory standards.
  • The inputs can accept K-type or J-type thermocouples (selectable via provided menu functions)
  • Oil and Water temperature NTC input compatible with most oil temperature senders and the MGL water temperature sender.
  • Also accepts MGL precision semiconductor senders for water and oil temperature.
  • Universal rev counter input. Can be used on a wide variety of engines using a variety of interface methods.
  • Fuel flow sender input. Can be used with most commercial liquid flow senders.
  • Calibration via provided menu functions.
  • Oil pressure sender input. Accepts most commercial oil pressure senders including those from VDO.
  • Fuel level sender input with extensive calibration functions provided to allow direct readout of fuel quantity corrected for tank shape and sender tolerances.
  • LM335 sensor based temperature sender to indicate ice warning. The sender is normally fitted to the outside of a carburetor, in close proximity to the throttle slider or valve or in the intake airflow.
  • The EMS included with the Ultra provides for a wide variety of engines and the display unit can be configured in many different ways as outlined under the “Device setup menu”.

A number of types of RDAC's are available for use with the Enigma, the choice between each depending on the number of thermocouple channels required (4, 12 or 24 channels); whether manifold pressure is required; and whether your engine piston or turbine:

RDAC - VT (for turbine engine & 4 thermocouple channels)

RDAC - VD (4 thermocouple channels - no manifold pressure)

RDAC - XB (12 thermocouple channels - no manifold pressure)

RDAC - XD (12 thermocouple channels - with manifold pressure)

And for an (almost) real life try-out of the Enigma, Download onto your PC the Enigma Simulator/designer software program!

Although the displayed instrument is smaller than real life, it has all the functionality of the real thing. Enter all the menu functions, configure the system for your aircraft, set the alarms etc, exactly as you will with the real thing. When opened after installation, the simulator will normally be running in 'demo mode' which gives a dynamic demonstration as though it was installed in a flying aircraft.

Use your mouse to click on the buttons on the RHS of the Enigma. Click on the numbers to change through screens 1 to 9 (some screens are blank). Click on 'menu' to go the the menu and so on. See the Enigma User Manual (download by clicking on the appropriate link above) for instructions on how to navigate the menu and change settings etc. It is quite intuitive, but, some guidance/explanation will be necessary because of the huge array of features.
